The Importance Of Security In Business VoIP Applications

It's unfortunate that when evaluating business VoIP solutions few mention the word security except in the context of web-based administration. This could be a fatal miscue to your business.

Keep in mind that a big advantage of VoIP is you can have people working from home or on the road. When you're logging in, are the credentials passed in the clear? Don't just take the vendor's word for it, have you tested it using a packet sniffer? If it's a requirement, is the call data encrypted?

Here's a scenario to consider:

You have Sales reps using an open WiFi network at a coffee shop or at a hotel. The call setup information is unencrypted and the IP stream carrying the conversation is unencrypted.

Why should you care about either of these things? Two risks:

#1: Toll fraud. Someone can sniff that authentication information and impersonate your sales rep. Your switch doesn't know the difference. You might not know that the credentials got swiped until your bill shows up with calls to a lot of foreign countries or (if you're very lucky) your carrier calls you and asks why your calling patterns have changed so much.

Good luck trying to get credit for toll fraud. The carrier is going to tell you that they put access to their network in at your premises and it was your responsibility to control it. There's probably language that covers them in your contract and/or tariff.

#2: Confidentiality of trade secrets. Maybe it's a quick call to check on fantasy football standings. But it could also be a call to a supplier to see if they'll do special pricing on a deal. That call could also be followed up by a call to a sales manager to talk about percentage mark-up. An unencrypted VoIP stream may seem complicated but its trivially easy to reassemble and "record" the whole conversation.

The above scenario is just an example of many ways your VoIP system may be vulnerable. I'm not discouraging you from implementing a business VoIP system if it's right for you. I am encouraging not to thoroughly evaluate security implications and be prepared to guard against any potential issues.

Whilst we all believe that satellites floating around the earth are responsible for the TV and the fact that we can watch the Superbowl in America all the way over the Atlantic in the UK the same cannot be said for the Internet. The Internet is run by an enormous network of copper and Fibre-Optic cables and in order for everyone to be able to connect to the Internet then there is some form of cabling infrastructure in place.

Many of these cables are submarine, in that they run under the water, they are well reinforced with up to nine layers of components to make sure these vital cables don't get disturbed. The problem is the cables running under the Mediterranean have recently become severed, initially one cable joining Egypt and Italy was broken but now a further two have been severed causing global problems, with Broadband Internet service disrupted in some Middle East countries such as Iran, India and Egypt.

The bigger concern was the disruption caused to telecommunications in these countries, especially India which as many people will know is home to thousands of outsourced call centres, BT was quick to re-route their network to deal with this disruption and reports say that although the telephone network quality isn't as clear as normal it is still workable.

The problem is that smaller companies with less comprehensive contingency plans are suffering; Vikas Jain, assistant vice president at AEZ Group, a real estate developer said, "We have a lot of offices connected by the net so because the internet is down means we are cut off from the head office,"

This problem is not the first of its kind, Broadband and other telecommunications in Taiwan were disrupted for months in 2006 after an earthquake managed to destroy 7 of 8 cables connecting to Mainland Asia. The repairs which were expected to last 10 days stretched out to months in order to get back up to speed. With the recent incident repair ships have been dispatched to repair cables before the situation worsens.

The reason for this disruption? Apparently the best guess is that a tanker had dragged its anchor along the sea bed. The repair time is likely to be a week from when the repair ships arrive, whilst the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Egypt said the Broadband services in Egypt would be back up at 80% within 48 hours of the initial breakdown. Hopefully the World Wide Web will be back to strength soon!

6 Tell-Tales Signs That You Need To Reformat Your Hard Drive

So you've noticed that your trusty computer has stopped being so trusty, and is now more concerned with crashing and not cooperating than performing your requested tasks. What can you do about it? You want your computer to run like it was brand new, but you don't want to have to go through the process of buying a new one, and you're not sure about when you should use that R word... Reno? Nope. Remove? Nope. Reformat? That's the word.

Here's 6 tell-tale signs that you need to reformat your hard drive.

Startup takes longer than a couple of minutes- Startup shouldn't take longer than 2-3 minutes even on a slightly older machine, so when it starts getting into the 5-10 minute range you may want to look into reformatting as an option to get your PC back in shape, or you can try doing some startup tweaks to get a faster startup if you don't want to reformat just yet. If you PC seems to hang (pause) at the Windows loading screen or any point during startup a good reformat should fix the hang, because it usually sorts out startup problems like hardware configurations and the sort.
Shutdown takes longer than a few minutes- Again, your shutdown shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, and that's being generous. Maybe your computer has to use the extra time to shutdown all the virus processes on your PC, but I dunno.
You've discovered viruses and spyware that you can't get rid of- Maybe your anti-virus program is crappy, or you've been infected by super viruses that just won't go away. A good reformat will get rid of all your bugs, so don't hesitate to use that as an option when you're knee-deep in viruses.
Half the time your programs and files end up not responding- When you can't hardly operate any programs without them not responding, or your computer particularly seems unstable something in your Windows installation probably got corrupted. It can easily get corrupted just over time with use and driver updates, they don't make OSes to last forever in a perfect state.
Windows errors on startup and shutdown- If you constantly receive Windows errors on your startup and shutdowns, then it may be a good idea to reformat. When everything is running smoothly you shouldn't get errors, errors only typically show up when something has gone wrong. Especially if you get the infamous Blue Screen Of Death, if that shows up, chances are it's only going to get worse, so better reformat now while you still have time.
Your computer begins playing Mozart- Back in the day when your computer dies it'd start playing classical music, if your computer does this, you can probably try reformatting, but I don't think it'll work. You can think of it as your computer's funeral music.

Remember to back up all of your important information before you reformat, make sure you don't forget those important pictures of your girl either that you'd regret losing. ;)

Areas not served by cable television cannot use this option for internet but cable companies are starting to expand their cable services for this very reason.

Adding television to your computer can be easier than you think. First of all you need a TV card to add to your motherboard and an empty PCI slot in the back of your computer. If you do not already have speakers connected to your sound card you will need to do this. VOIP is another service that is fairly simple to add to your computer. Adding music to your computer is as simple as downloading a service. Some services are free for a certain amount of usage. After you exceed this, you can pay for more.

The type of internet connection you choose, as you can see, depends on a lot of things. Availability of service, distance to the service you want, and cost is all factors you will consider. If you are choosing a service for your home there will be different considerations than if it is for a business. The best way to choose is to sit down and decide what services are available for you and what you want your computer to do.

Cons: Setup and monthly costs can be prohibitive.

Costs: A full T1 obviously will cost more than a Fractional T1. Expect cost to start at around a $400 for a stable, reliable system (e.g. from a Tier 1 provder). A required router is additional unless provided as a "freebie" incentive by the vendor. Price climbs as distance from the providers Central Office (CO) increases. However....the pricing for these connections varies widely depending on the carrier, location of service and the application for which the connection is being used. For example...Tier 1 providers may cost more than local/regional Tier2 and Tier 3 providers but are much more stable and reliable. Also, expect to pay more if you are in a rural area or need integrated (voice and data combined) or bonded (multiple T1s bound in 1 network....option vs full DS3) T1 service.

In general 10 Gigabit Ethernet links are deployed in parts of an enterprise or service provider network where large numbers of Gigabit Ethernet links are being aggregated. This most commonly occurs in the network core, but as gigabit-to-the desktop deployments continue to grow the need for 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks from the network edge will emerge. Following are some common uses or applications for 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

Enterprise

As all enterprise applications converge on the common Ethernet backbone, the network must be able to gracefully support a new array of bandwidth hungry applications such as storage, backups and video. To effectively deal with this onslaught of bandwidth demand, forward-thinking network architects are designing enterprise networks with 10 Gigabit Ethernet to meet current and future needs.

Starting from the edge of the network, as gigabit-to-the-desktop deployments continue to grow, the need for 10 gigabit uplinks from a wiring closet switch to handle the performance demands of power users will emerge. Backbone links to entire floors or buildings may run over optical fibers at gigabit rates, while drops to desktop workstations may need to be no faster than 100 Mbps. Naturally, with this upsurge in bandwidth, demand 10 Gigabit Ethernet will be used as a high-speed interconnection between multiple buildings. These buildings could be in close proximity on a self-contained "campus", or could be many miles apart and be connected by dark fiber provided by a local service provider or municipality. Due to the limited distance of 10 Gigabit Ethernet on multimode fiber (MMF), singlemode fiber (SMF) must be deployed or leased to support 10 gigabit building interconnects.

High Performance Cluster Computing (HPCC)

Server clusters are a group of tens, hundreds or even thousands of relatively inexpensive (e.g. 1U Linux servers) computers (referred to as nodes) connected in parallel to cooperatively solve large, complex problems. Cluster computing has become a mainstream technological tool for research, financial modeling, digital image rendering and scientific applications. The connection between the various computers in the cluster is typically an Ethernet switch.

Gigabit Ethernet Servers and NAS

As servers and Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices are attached to the edge of the network at 10 gigabit speeds, the network core will have to scale proportionally by link aggregating multiple 10 Gigabit Ethernet links or eventually with 40 Gigabit Ethernet. Network architecture must take into account meeting current Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet server connectivity needs and scale upwards as the need for greater bandwidth inevitably emerges.

Storage Interconnect (iSCSI)

Fibre Channel has been the protocol of choice for storage area networking, however, with the emergence of the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) iSCSI protocol, Fibre Channels dominance is being challenged by IP/Ethernet. Simply put, iSCSI is an IP-based storage networking standard that facilitates data transfers by carrying SCSI (a protocol commonly used for communication between storage devices and computers) commands over IP networks. As iSCSI continues to gain in popularity, 10 Gigabit Ethernet links are the logical choice to carry the enormous volumes of data that traverse large corporate networks.

Given the extreme complex nature of designing an appropriate Gigabit Ethernet network architecture....and even deciding if it's right for your organization....it's strongly suggested that you not dump this whole animal on your IT staff. When you connect to the Internet, you might connect through a regular modem (dial-up), through a local-area network (LAN) connection in your office, through a cable modem (Cable Internet) or through a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection.

For me DSL connection is the most cost-effective solution that home based and small business office can leverage to grow a business. It is not only widely available but its reliability and high-speed capability is what it makes one of the most preferred access service.

DSL is a broadband high-speed connection that uses the same wires (2-wire) as a regular telephone line. Simultaneous use of voice and data (internet) one can log on to the internet while also using the line to make voice calls. The speed connection is much higher than a regular modem which can hit to a max of 56Kbps only. DSL can use existing phone line or delivered as stand-alone DSL connection. The company that offers DSL will usually provide the modem as part of the installation.

A drawback with DSL is that a DSL connection works better when you are closer to the provider's central office. The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet. The service is not available everywhere again owing to distance limitation.

All types of DSL service fall into one of two basic categories: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric types of DSL support the same bandwidth between the subscriber and the service provider in both directions.

Asymmetric types of DSL or ADSL support relatively more bandwidth in the downstream direction (from the service provider to the subscriber) and less bandwidth in the upstream (from the subscriber to the service provider). ADSL is popular among Internet Service Providers (ISP).

ADSL uses two pieces of equipment, one on the customer end and one at the Internet service provider which is usually telephone company or other provider of DSL services. At the customer's location there is a DSL transceiver also called Customer-Premise Equipment or CPE, which may also provide other services. The DSL service provider has a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to receive customer connections.

A DSL Modem or CPE is like transceiver equipment, it transmit and receive data packets (information) over ordinary telephone cable. This data packets are actually digital signals but since digital signal cannot travel far, the DSLAM from the ISPs head end transform the signal from digital to analog signal for transmission over an analog channel (two-wire telephone cable) usually at a distance of up to 5Km from central office and the DSL Modem or CPE converts the signal back to digital. The DSL Modem is the equipment where data from the user's computer or network is connected to the DSL line. DSL Modem can connect to a customer's equipment in several ways, though most residential installation uses USB or 10 base-T Ethernet connections (RJ-45).

The DSLAM at the service provider is the equipment that really allows DSL to happen. A DSLAM is the point-of-contact where a dedicated, high-speed link to the internet called backhaul connection is terminated. An E1 (2048Kbps) or T1 (1536Kbps) Dedicated Internet is an example of a backhaul internet link that can be use to service between 80-100 DSL subscribers. DSL technology is the reason why internet connection is becoming cheaper by the days. It is able to share or distributed for greater use a dedicated connection (backhaul) to several subscribers while maintaining quality of service. Cost-of-service is significantly lowered.

The DSLAM takes connections from many DSL subscribers and aggregates them onto a single, high-capacity connection to the Internet. DSLAMs are flexible and able to support multiple types of DSL in a single central office, and different varieties of protocol and modulation. In addition, the DSLAM may provide additional functions including routing or dynamic IP address assignment for the customers.

ADSL is a distance-sensitive technology: as cable connection's length increases, the signal quality decreases and the connection speed goes down. Connection is much more stable the nearer the user is to the central office. With a maximum 18,000 Feet (5,640 meters) effective service length, some ADSL providers generally limit distance it serves to a max of 3.5Km. Beyond this some subscribers enjoy speeds below the promised maximums.

Bursting and Committed Information Rate (CIR) are two factors to consider in choosing a DSL service. Remember, DSL is a shared internet connection service depending on the port configuration or package variation of the service providers. Bursting is the term use to describe a service which does not guarantee a certain speed. Connection bandwidth may vary from maximum of the port-speed subscribed (as provided by the ISP) to a minimum of as much as 32Kbps. DSL that offers Committed Information Rate (CIR) or minimum guaranteed speed is much more desirable for it assures a sure connection to the international internet gateway.

In choosing an ADSL package fit for your home-based or small business requirements, try to ask the ISP of the recommended count of users and type of application that the DSL package can support. Usually, residential package can support only up to 1 or 2 PC. However, with competition and greater availability of other broadband internet access, ADSL packages currently being offered by ISPs can support all type voice, data and video applications and at greater speed.

How to Secure a Wireless Network

I use both a wired and wireless network at home. I am fortunate enough to have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provides up to three IP addresses. I connected a switch to my modem, and two routers (one wired, and the other wireless) to the switch. Each router has a separate IP address from my ISP. My desktop is connected to the wired router, while two laptops connect to the wireless one. I can connect either laptop to the wired router with a network cable if I choose to as well.

The biggest issue I wanted to address when setting up the wireless network is that of security. I have always been skeptical of wireless security, but since I have purchased a laptop, I decided to give wireless networking a try.

There is a lot of discussion on how to secure a wireless connection, some good, some bad, and some useless. This post will not go into detail about how to change the router settings to make it secure, but it will discuss what needs to be changed.

Administrative Credentials - Important
This is important whether you have a wireless or wired network. Ensure that all APs (access points) have a good strong password associated with the administrative account. If someone can get into your router because of a weak password, then your network can be compromised. You may also want to change the administrative ID as well.

Enable WPA Encryption - Important
This is probably the most important security measure to take when securing your wireless network. The previous standard called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) was easy to crack within about 30 seconds.

The new Wi-fi Protected Access (WPA) is more secure and should be enabled. You must also choose a passphrase that will be needed for each computer to connect to your router. Choose a passphase that is long, hard to guess, but easy to remember. Write it down somewhere so you don't forget it. For assistance on creating a strong passphrase, please read my post on creating secure passwords. Follow the advice, but just make the passphrase longer.

Reducing the IP Addresses - Important
Routers allow you to limit the number of IP addresses they assign. If you have one computer, have the router assign only one IP address. If you have three computers, then the router should assign three IP addresses. This won't prevent someone from getting into your network, but if all computers are connected, then the router won't assign any more IP addresses to another computer.

Turning Off Router - Important
If you are going to be away for awhile, such as on vacation, simply turn off the router. If the router is off, then no one will be able to connect to it while you're away. You won't lose your router settings, and simply turn it back on when you return.

Turn off SSID Broadcast - Not Important
This is a debatable option with regards to a wireless connection. Many people would argue that not broadcasting your SSID will help with security. My opinion is that it won't really provide security. Those who you are trying to gain access to your wireless network can easily determine your SSID, whether it is broadcast or not. I have also had problems with connecting to a wireless network when the SSID is not broadcasted, so I leave my setting on broadcast.

Using MAC Filtering - Not Important
Similar to broadcasting the router's SSID, this is also a debatable point. An IP address is specific to a computer, a MAC address is specific to a network adapter within that computer. Enabling MAC filtering on your router only allows specific network adapters to connect to the router. While this may seem like a good idea, it can be a headache to manage the MAC addresses for all the computers that will be connecting to the wireless router. A knowledgeable person will also be able to "spoof" (imitate) a MAC address so it doesn't guarantee security.

Summary
There are many settings that can be changed in your wireless router to make your network secure. This article has listed many of them, and you can make use of all of them or only some. The following, however, should be done to make your connection secure:

Changing the administrative password and ID.
Enabling WPA encryption.
Reduce the number of IP addresses.

How Much Bandwidth Does Your Business Need?

It doesn't matter what size your business is ... small, medium, or large. Having to determine how much bandwidth is needed for a new computer network, or upgrade of an existing one, is enough to make anyone break out in a cold sweat.

You can relax. Here's a simple guide to walk you through the minefield... and get you to the other side.

This should be approached from two angles - the first is to figure out where you are, and the second is where you need to go.

(1) Where you are - You need to have a sense of what you have now and how is it being utilized. Get an inventory of your current data and voice circuits. The monthly bills will give you a sense of call volume. You can ask your telecom provider for a report that will tell you max concurrent lines in use. This will be helpful to determine call volumes. For example if you have three PRIs, you may find that at times you have all channels in use at the same time. This could indicate capacity issues.

If you don't have any network monitoring in place, a tool like PRTG (cheap) or MRTG (free) can give you a sense of bandwidth and traffic type. Are people streaming videos all day long? Is it important for them to do so?

2) Where you're going - Once you get a handle of where you are, you need to understand what the business goals are for the next year or two. If they expect to add people, this means more capacity. If they want to improve sharing or data or extend systems across multiple locations, this may mean private networks. Adding more people? This means bandwidth and call volume may go up - especially if it is sales or customer support since they are one the phone more often.

As far as circuit selection, that is driven off what is available by providers in your area and how much does it cost for a term (12,24, 36 mo). Typically, you can get T1s just about anywhere, but you are limited to 1.5Mbps increments. This means you need more cards in your routers. After bonding 4-6 T1' it may be better to look at another circuit type. Check to see if ethernet/fast ethernet or fiber is available. These give you the most flexibility in increasing bandwidth as time goes on.

Based on circuit costs, I would not really go more than 36 months - 24 may be better. Also, go competitive bid if you can for services. Why Haven't You Reached Your Goals?

Setting and achieving goals is a science. By that I mean that achieving a certain outcome, any outcome, has a specific formula behind it. It's the law of cause and effect in action. Anything can be achieved if the proper steps are taken. And the kicker is that many times we are fully aware of the necessary steps, yet we don't take them.

I am fortunate enough to belong to a personal development coaching group. In a recent discussion with the group I became aware of one key principle that has dramatically altered my own power to achieve.

It came in the form of a simple sentence. What was it that changed my results instantly? During this specific coaching session I heard, "You must get comfortable with being uncomfortable." This simple sentence carries with it a lot of weight.

You see, each one of us who are reaching for more, reaching outside the box, we already know what needs to be done in order to get our goals. In the rare instance when we are not completely satisfied with all the steps we need to take, we do know where we need to go to get that information.

But for the sake of argument, lets work with the premise that we are fully aware of what is needed to achieve a certain outcome. We set the goal. We are clear as to what we want. We know the specific steps we need to take. We set the deadline. Yet we derail our own efforts. Why is that?

The answer is in the fear of being uncomfortable. In order to get things we don't already have, we need to do things we haven't yet done. In that process, in the doing of things we haven't done is where that uncomfortable feeling hits us. When that happens we have two directions in which we may go. You can move forward and exercise your will, withstanding the feelings of discomfort. Or you can abandon the action, thereby stepping back into your comfort zone.

All our goals are to be found outside our current comfort zone. In fact, if your goal has no uncomfortable feelings, chances are you are not reaching out far enough. The key to realize here is that those uncomfortable feels are only temporary. In some cases they may be quick flashes of distress. Eventually something will hit you and you will come to realize the joy in the new action.

No one knows how long it will take. Could be a minute. Could be a year. How long it takes is greatly dependent on your own mental attitude. However the one thing we do know is that with each goal comes a point of uncertainty, of distress. Your ability to push through, to continue on beyond those feelings is the deciding factor on whether you reach your goal or you stay where you are.

The paradox is that your current comfort zone is not all that comfortable. If it were you wouldn't be looking to get more. So in reality, you are going to face discomfort either way. Your choice is whether you want to be uncomfortable in your present situation or if you are willing to feel a temporary discomfort to get to your goal.

Too many people live by the expression, "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." These are the people that live their lives avoiding uncertainty. They may be uncomfortable but at least they know what that feeling is like. They are afraid to venture on and experience more of life if they have to put themselves in any form of distress.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference between those who live their entire life in a meager existence and those who reach the summit. Commit yourself to reaching your summit. Commit to transform distress into success. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and your results in life will exceed your wildest imagination.
